In a groundbreaking move, the Denver Broncos have signed cornerback Patrick Surtain II to a four-year, $96 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.

The new contract, which averages $24 million annually, surpasses the previous record held by Green Bay Packers’ Jaire Alexander at $21 million per year.

Surtain’s new deal highlights his exceptional performance and value to the Broncos. Drafted 9th overall by Denver in the 2021 NFL Draft, Surtain has quickly emerged as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks.

Over the past two seasons, he has consistently demonstrated his elite skills, earning Pro Bowl honors in both years and being named a first-team All-Pro in 2022.

The Broncos’ decision to secure Surtain with this historic contract underscores his importance to the team’s defense, particularly as they face formidable opponents within their division. Last season, Surtain played a crucial role in Denver’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, intercepting Patrick Mahomes and helping the Broncos achieve their first win against Kansas City since 2015.

This performance not only showcased his defensive prowess but also contributed significantly to the team's competitive edge in the AFC West.

In addition to his impact on the field, Surtain’s extension is noteworthy as one of the first major contract renewals for defensive players from the 2021 draft class. Micah Parsons, a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys who was selected three spots after Surtain, is also expected to receive a lucrative contract soon. Some projections suggest Parsons could secure the first $200 million deal for a non-quarterback in NFL history.

This contract extension for Surtain comes ahead of the final base year of his rookie deal. While the Broncos had the option to exercise the fifth-year option to keep him under contract through the end of the 2025 season, they chose to reward him earlier with a substantial extension.

As the Broncos prepare for the new season, Surtain’s presence will be crucial as they navigate a division that includes high-powered offenses like those led by Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs and Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers.
